On two varieties of negative polar interrogatives in Japanese

چکیده
2. Three interpretations of negative polar interrogatives • Ladd (1981) distinguishes two varieties of negative polar interrogatives, which are epistemically biased toward the opposite directions. o the “outside NEG” question: conveys a positive bias; “the speaker believes a proposition P and wants confirmation” o the “inside NEG” question: conveys a negative bias; “the speaker has just inferred a proposition ¬P” • The “outside NEG” question is compatible with a positive polarity item such as too, but not a negative polarity item such as either; the “inside NEG” shows the opposite pattern.

Semantics and Pragmatics of Cantonese Polar Questions: an inquisitive approach
This paper analyzes four kinds of Cantonese polar questions, HO2, ME1, AA4 and A-NOTA questions in the framework of radical inquisitive semantics (Groenendijk & Roelofsen, 2010; Aher, 2012; Sano, 2014). HO2, ME1 and A-NOT-A questions have multidimensional semantics. In addition to their primary speech act of questioning, HO2 and ME1 interrogatives encode secondary assertive acts of positive and...
متن کاملMatti MiestaMo (Helsinki) POLAR INTERROGATIVES IN URALIC LANGUAGES A TYPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
The paper surveys the domain of polar interrogation in the Uralic language family in a typological perspective. An overview of the ways in which polar interrogation is marked in the world’s languages is presented and the encoding of the domain in Uralic languages is examined against this background. All the major types of polar interrogative marking are found in the family. Polar interrogatives...
متن کاملDivision of Labor in the Interpretation of Declaratives and Interrogatives
This paper presents an account of the semantic content and conventional discourse effects of a range of sentence types in English, namely falling declaratives, polar interrogatives, and certain kinds of rising declaratives and tag interrogatives. The account aims to divide the labor between compositional semantics and conventions of use in a principled way. We argue that falling declaratives an...
متن کاملThe Construction Meaning of Interrogatives: Evidence From Embodied Grammar
In formal semantics polar interrogatives are often conceived as pairs of a proposition and its negation (Hamblin 1958). While allowing for interesting research, this view lacks plausible cognitive grounding. We therefore propose that propositional contents are represented by pairs of situation tokens and situation types: In positive declaratives the token fits (or fails to fit) the type, in int...
متن کاملWh-Concord in Okinawan = Syntactic Movement + Morphological Merger
The main purpose of this paper is to provide a novel account for Wh-Concord in Okinawan based on the Copy Theory of Movement and Distributed Morphology. We propose that Wh-Concord interrogatives and Japanese-type wh-interrogatives have exactly the same derivation in the syntactic component: the Q-particle ga, base-generated as adjoined to a wh-phrase, undergoes movement to the clause-final posi...
